Torrens to Torrens cuts travel times
Motorists using the new Torrens to Torrens motorway could shave up to 10 minutes off their trip during peak periods.
The State Government opened the motorway on 28 September, with RAA testing prior to the opening estimating the $801 million upgrade – on the stretch of South Rd between Pym St and Adams St – could shorten motorists’ morning commute south by up to 9 minutes. Drivers heading north along South Rd in peak afternoon traffic may save as much as 6 minutes thanks to the new motorway. While it’s too early to pull conclusive figures as the road has only been open for two weeks, it does appear to be easing congestion.
RAA Senior Manager Road Safety Charles Mountain said the separation of key intersections and the rail line was expected to significantly reduce delays along this important 2.5km section of the South Rd corridor. “RAA has advocated for the upgrade of this vital corridor and completion of each new section brings a non-stop corridor that much closer,” Mr Mountain said.
“This section of the corridor will improve traffic conditions not just for motorists but also the freight industry. The condition of South Rd between Torrens Rd and Port Rd was so poor that it was the most nominated road in RAA’s 2013 Risky Roads survey.
“Motorists will remember only too well the dangerous narrow lanes, power poles on the edge of the kerbside lanes, delays at the level crossings and the busy intersection with Port Rd,” Mr Mountain said. RAA has also welcomed the announcement that the next corridor section – between Pym St and the Superway – will commence soon, intending to provide an efficient link from Torrens Rd to the Northern Expressway.
