The flowers are in full bloom, trees are vibrantly green and the sun is out again. With a spring in your step, check out these great events happening in October in SA.
1. 100th Melrose Show
When: 5 October
Where: Dorington Park Showgrounds, Flinders Ranges
Be part of history as the Melrose Show marks its incredible 100th event.
Nicknamed the picnic show of the north, the event is hosted by the Mount Remarkable Agricultural Society. The show’s a great day out for the whole family, filled with classic country charm and sideshows, stalls, shearing demonstrations, chainsaw art, face-painting and much more. Out-of-towners can book a long weekend in the Flinders Ranges and soak up everything the region has to offer.
2. Odyssey Festival
When: 12 October
Where: Morphettville Racecourse
Dust off your bell-bottom jeans and be ready to bring the ’70s back into fashion at SA’s ultimate tribute event, Odyssey! This is your chance to boogie on down to hits from Billy Joel, Elton John, Stevie Nicks, Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Carole King and Linda Ronstadt. These hits will be recreated and performed by a stellar line-up of Australia’s most critically acclaimed tribute acts.

3. Cape Jervis Community Club Fete
When: 12 October
Where: Cape Jervis Community Club
Start stocking up on those stocking stuffers at the Cape Jervis Community Club Fete, open 10am to 3pm. You’ll feel great supporting local artisans offering handmade goods including olives, sauces and jams, gins, jewellery, plants and collectibles.
Meanwhile, your furry and feathered friends can enter the free pet show with all entrants receiving a prize. Finish off the afternoon with a delicious Devonshire tea and scones, with all funds raised supporting the club.
4. CheeseFest
When: 19–20 October
Where: Rundle Park/Kadlitpina
The ‘big cheese’ of dairy festivals returns for its 19th year in 2024. CheeseFest brings together the best dairy products from all over the country for a cracker of a weekend topped with tastings, workshops and cheese-themed cooking demonstrations. Don’t forget to check out the RAA Pavilion featuring Matt Preston, Callum Hann and more. Then kick back with a local beverage, craft your own artisanal cheese platter and chill to live music.

5. Bay to Birdwood
When: 20 October
Where: West Beach to Adelaide Hills
Grab your deck chair and settle in to wave to the drivers of SA’s largest historic vehicle cavalcade as they make their way from West Beach to the Adelaide Hills.
Bay to Birdwood has been a fixture on the South Australian calendar since 1980, and this year more than 1500 heritage and rare vehicles will drive the 67km route to the Birdwood Finish Festival at the National Motor Museum.
6. OzAsia Festival
When: 24 October–10 November
Where: Various locations
With lanterns filling the night sky and the OzAsia Festival in town, you’ll be forgiven for forgetting you’re in Australia. Start your night on the town filling your belly at the Lucky Dumpling Market before heading out to see a great theatre, comedy, film or dance performance.
There are also plenty of free activities for the whole family to enjoy. Follow the Moon Lantern Trail on opening weekend as it transforms the River Torrens riverbank into a wonderland of light, kick back with the great music on the OzAsia Festival Stage, and be mesmerised by the festival’s Weekend of Words.
7. Salon des Refusés 2024
When: Ending 26 October
Where: David Roche Gallery
The Salon des Refusés art exhibition is making its way to South Australia after a successful Sydney exhibition. With 60 works on display, the art is chosen for its quality, diversity and experimentation. The exhibition is known as the “popular alternative” to the Archibald and Wynne portraiture and landscape prizes, and showcases art that was submitted, but didn’t feature in those esteemed collections.

8. Quorn Quandong Festival
When: 26–27 October
Where: Quorn, Flinders Ranges
Head to the Quorn Quandong Festival for a weekend jampacked full of discovery. Learn about the versatility of the native quandong (kurti) fruit, as well as sustainability, landcare and the history of the town of Quorn.
From sunrise yoga to guided tours of the Quorn Bush Food Garden, to sampling delicious fare from local traders while kicking back to live music, there’s something for everyone.
