Unfurl yourself from the couch because there’s so much happening around South Australia during August. From food and art, to science and nostalgia, these events are worth heading out for.
1. SALA Festival
When: 1–31 August
Where: Various locations
If your August is a blank canvas, then the South Australian Living Artists (SALA) Festival is the brush stroke that will fill your calendar with light and colour. Find thought-provoking, beautiful and unique visual art from more than 9000 artists on display in more than 600 venues across the state.
There’s a lot happening, including the Art against extinction art and photography exhibition at Monarto Safari Park to the off-beat artist’s Slide Night and a full day touring the Adelaide Hills to Karoonda on a party bus with artists. 2. Fleurieu Food Festival
When: 1–31 August
Where: Various locations
Foodies rejoice! The Fleurieu Food Festival is back for its third year running, filling the month of August with more than 50 culinary events showcasing the region’s outstanding food and beverage producers.
Go on a decadent sugar-filled journey with Candyland – The Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Bec Hardy Wines, don your finest suits and gowns for the Ekhidna Wines Winter Glitter Ball or take a winter cooking class where cheese is the star of the show with Anita Robin. Discover classes, feasts and interactive experiences to suit all tastes.

3. 2024 Suncorp Super Netball Grand Final Captain’s Run
When: 2 August
Where: Adelaide Entertainment Centre Arena
If you missed out on tickets to the grand final (there are a handful of package seats left), why not head along to the Captain’s Run? If you’ve ever wondered what goes on behind the scenes – and on the court – before a netball grand final, this is your chance.
Give your team a rousing show of support at their final training session, and get the chance to meet and greet the team after training.

4. Science Alive!
When: 3–4 August
Where: Adelaide Showground
The largest interactive science expo in Australia has the right formula for a fun family day. At Science Alive!, budding scientists of all ages will get a kick out of learning how science and technology influences our everyday lives.
On the main stage, sit back and be wowed by Nitro Nat playing with the science of music, Marty McBubble filling the air with bubbles (in the name of science, of course) and check out some amazing Australian wildlife. Explore the dedicated science zones to learn about your (and your little scientist’s) favourite topics, including thrilling demonstrations in the Drone Zone, sports science with the Adelaide Crows, and of course, live robot wars.

5. Australian Toys 1880–1965: The Luke Jones Collection
When: Closing 24 August
Where: David Roche Gallery, North Adelaide.
Return to a time before home computers and video games. The Australian Toys 1880–1965: The Luke Jones Collection is a nostalgic stroll down memory lane.
Antique toys such as the popular 1920s tin-plate truck, mass-produced post-war toys including the Glenn Holden plastic cars and more will be on display. Let your kids go on a journey of their own as they search for clues on a hidden objects trail, while you enjoy this snapshot into Australian playtime of yesteryear.
