Take a walking tour of Adelaide’s street art

Who needs a canvas and paintbrush when you have a wall and spray can? Artists have been painting on bricks and mortar since ancient times.

From cave paintings to Egyptian tombs and frescos, blank spaces have been artists’ canvases throughout history.

Fast forward to New York in the 1970s, where an explosion of graffiti on subway trains sparked a worldwide street art movement.

Inevitably, the aerosol revolution made it to Adelaide – a city that prides itself on art and pushing boundaries.

Jimmy C, Jasmine Crisp and Vans the Omega are just some of the well-known South Australian street artists who have helped transform the city into an evocative open-air gallery. Once drab walls are now bursting with colour, feeling and personality.

Awesome, hey. That’s just a sneak peek of the Hindley Street and Rundle Street precincts. There’s so much more amazing street art all over town.

A walking tour isn’t just the best way to see it, but also a great way to spend a relaxing day taking in the sights and sounds of our beautiful city.

Pack some refreshments, put on your sneakers, pull up the Street Art Explosion map on your mobile phone and you’re good to go!

Or, you could kick back and relax on the EcoCaddy Street Art Experience, a terrific tour hosted by locals in the know.

Just one thing: new works can pop up overnight. That’s the nature of this artistic beast. So, they might not be on the Street Art Explosion map, but it’s a great starting point anyway.

Pro-tip: go for an aimless wander and see what you find. You never know what stunning works are just around the corner.
