Driving towards an electric vehicle future
South Australia is set to become the third Australian state to introduce an electric vehicle (EV) road user charge, following in the footsteps of Victoria and New South Wales.
When the road user charge is introduced in 2027, EV owners will have to pay 2.5 cents per kilometre they drive, while their hybrid plug-in counterparts will be charged 2 cents per kilometre.
But what is a road user charge and how will it impact the uptake of EVs in South Australia? RAA Future Mobility Expert Mark Borlace answers these questions and more in the video below.
To secure the Motor Vehicles (Electric Vehicle Levy) Amendment Bill’s passage through the Upper House, the State Government also included an incentive package for people purchasing EVs.
This includes a $3000 subsidy for the first 7000 people who purchase an EV in SA and a three-year motor registration fee exemption.
RAA is also playing a vital role in the EV space. In the past couple of years, we’ve introduced electric cars to our fleet, began offering an EV to hire as part of a partnership with Flexicar and supported Chargefox to install 22 electric chargers between Adelaide and Brisbane.
