Street Smart Primary goes online

Unable to visit schools this year during the peak of the COVID-19 period, RAA has come up with a unique way to deliver road-safety lessons, launching Street Smart Primary TV in May.   Last year, more than 20,000 school children attended RAA’s Street Smart Primary lessons in in person However, this year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, some face-to-face lessons had to be cancelled.   In their place, RAA launched Street Smart Primary TV – an internet-based series providing road-safety education resources to teachers, parents and students. Lessons focus on a variety of road-safety topics, from the importance of wearing a helmet while cycling, to pedestrian safety.   Senior Manager of Community Engagement Ben Haythorpe said the videos were a planned temporary measure while Street Smart Primary educators were unable to visit classrooms. “Even though we have started to return to face-to-face teaching again, these videos are going to be a great resource for the schools that we can’t get to,” Mr Haythorpe said.

We’ve produced videos tailored to different age groups.

  “The videos, as well as other educational material, are available online and will assist schools, teachers and parents to educate children about road safety.” Episode 1 of Stre­­et Smart Primary TV looks at visibility, bike and road-user safety, as well as reaction times.   Activities and other materials relating to each lesson are available to download. Episode 2 is expected to be released over the coming weeks.
