SA’s best burger joints

Remember when the only places you could purchase a decent burger were fast-food restaurants and local fish and chip shops? Well, times have changed for the better.   Today, South Australia is scattered with restaurants specialising in all sorts of mouth-watering burgers, from vegan varieties to sophisticated offerings packed with an array of fillings. We’ve whittled down an extensive list of burger establishments, to bring you 7 of our favourites.

1. Bread and Bone

Peel St
Bread and Bone’s wood grill provides these burgers with that unmistakeable smoky flavour. If you’re a bit of a traditionalist, try the cheeseburger which comes with all the trimmings like pickles, mustard, tomato and of course, plenty of sauce. However, if you’re looking for something a little bit different, order the Slow Braised Brisket Burger topped with slaw, horseradish and a spiced apple and pear chutney. There’s nothing else like it. Don’t feel like a burger? Easy. Bread and Bone also plates up gourmet hot dogs, as well as a variety of starters like hot wings and fried chicken.

2. Gang Gang

Parkside
We can’t go past a restaurant that’s come up with creative names for its burgers like Cardi B (crispy, buttermilk chicken breast with Balinese salsa and smashed avocado), Spice Girl (an Asian-inspired cheeseburger with American cheese), and Big Poppa (crispy SA bacon with a fried egg and haloumi). Gang Gang offers a variety of beef, chicken and vegetarian burgers with a twist. Take your pick from toppings like kimchi, Balinese salsa and wasabi mayo. With their food tasting as good as it sounds, this Parkside restaurant has quickly become a popular haunt for SA burger aficionados.

3. Burger Boss

Newton, Ascot Park and Morphett Vale
If you’re after a more traditional American-style burger, then Burger Boss is the place for you. Complete with retro booths, the diner-like restaurant offers classic beef burgers with crispy chips and milkshakes on the side. They also serve up a variety of hot dogs and loaded fries topped with melted cheese, caramelised onion and Burger Boss’ own special sauce. The Boss Ranger – a juicy beef burger combined with crispy onion rings, Burger Boss’ special sauce and oozing melted cheese on a soft bun – is a must try.

4. Port Burger

Port Noarlunga
This little gem down at Port Noarlunga might not look like much more than a couple of shipping containers, but it serves some of the tastiest burgers in SA. You’ll find a menu packed with choices, from regulars such as the Beef and Bacon Burger to more unusual items like the Pork Belly Sandwich and chickpea, dukkah and pumpkin options. This place is perfect on a balmy summer evening, with plenty of outdoor seating.

5. Natural Born Grillers

Mount Gambier
Tucked away in a small shopping complex, you’ll find thick, juicy burgers at this Mount Gambier hotspot. Don’t wear your Sunday best when eating at Natural Born Grillers, as the size of these burgers means you might get a little bit messy. But you won’t just find quantity at Natural Born Grillers – their grub is certified quality as well. The Kath and Kim is a fan-favourite, topped with juicy beetroot and – an upcoming trend in the burger world – onion rings. It’s then topped with Natural Born Grillers’ house-made pickles and special sauce.

6. Two-bit Villains

Adelaide Arcade
Are you a vegan, vegetarian or just looking for a plant-based alternative to beef burgers? If you are, then Two-bit Villains will satisfy all your burger cravings. Whether you have a hankering for a cheeseburger or a buttermilk fried ‘chicken’ sandwich, this restaurant on the balcony level of the Adelaide Arcade provides tasty meat alternatives. It’s hard to go past the Vegan Sloppy Joe when looking through the menu. This soy-based burger is topped with fresh slaw, pickles and a delicious maple bbq sauce. Don’t forget that Two-bit Villains also makes hand-crafted sodas. If you’re looking for something to quench your thirst, try the Creaming Soda. For something a bit different, order the Tummy Tonic.
