The worst of the chilly weather is hopefully behind us and it’s nearly time to ditch the beanies and Ugg boots until next year. Spring into spring with these fun-filled September events.
1. Paul Kelly
When: 4 September
Where: The Arena, Hindmarsh
Paul Kelly (pictured above), one of Australia’s most successful and beloved singer-songwriters, returns to his hometown for one-night only. Boasting 17 ARIAs, five APRAs and an Order of Australia, Paul Kelly will perform his largest-ever headline show at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre’s Arena.
Expect to hear such classics as ‘To Her Door, Before Too Long’, ‘From Little Things Big Things Grow’ and of course the Christmas staple, ‘How to Make Gravy’. Joining Paul Kelly is three-time GRAMMY winner Lucinda Williams and her band. Ranked eighth on American Songwriter’s list of the 10 greatest female songwriters of all time, Lucinda Williams is sure to delight with her raw and poetic songs.
2. Neat Sips Fortified Festival
When: 6–7 September
Where: McLaren Vale Distillery
Fancy a Father’s Day weekend with a difference? Head to the Neat Sips Fortified Festival in McLaren Vale. This family-friendly event showcases wines from more than eight Australian regions, plus beer, and cocktails. If you’re keen to learn about your favourite tipple, get some hands-on experience with a range of masterclasses.
Enjoy live music, free activities for the kids, and you won’t miss a kick if you want to plant yourself in front of the big screen to watch the footy finals. From fortified wines, open-fire cooking, Franklin Harbour oysters, and Barossa Cheese Co. favourites, there’s something for everyone. 3. Flinders Ranges – A Brush with Art
When: 6 September – 12 October
Where: Various locations across the Flinders and Southern Flinders Ranges
Hip hip hooray! One of SA’s leading regional art events is celebrating its 21st year, and it’s time to celebrate. Stretching across 20 locations in the beautiful Flinders, this year’s Flinders Ranges – A Brush with Art promises to be the biggest yet. The event highlights the amazing talents of artists from regional, rural and remote communities, and provides a place for visitors to explore, connect and create.
You’ll find more than 50 unique exhibitions, workshops and experiences. For the first time, you can plan your journey from the central ‘Art Beat’ hub in Jamestown. Here, you can maximise your time with information, maps, recommendations and the latest festival news.
4. Adelaide Guitar Festival
When: 10 September – 12 October
Where: Various locations
You may be a bit of a Guitar Hero, but these musicians are next level. At the Adelaide Guitar Festival, you’ll be enthralled by Australian country star Troy Cassar-Daley’s captivating storytelling and John Butler’s groove-laden tunes. And if you’re a Led Zeppelin fan, don’t miss the world premiere of Physical Graffiti Live in Concert, celebrating the 50th anniversary of this masterful band’s sixth album.
Australian singer-songwriter Lior is back with his full band, and this year he’s joined by acclaimed guitarist Lau Noah. Maybe a gig in one of Adelaide’s many pubs is more your style, or you want to hear talks from world-leading musicians – everyone can find their perfect tempo.

5. Airtouch 500 at The Bend
When: 12–14 September
Where: The Bend, Tailem Bend
Once again, the peaceful town of Tailem Bend becomes the centre of the V8 universe. Round nine of the Supercars Championship hits The Bend Motorsport Park, but this time with a difference. The Supercars Enduro Cup has been revived, with this year’s event the first ever enduro to be held at the raceway. This is the 500km precursor to Bathurst and the blistering, 27-car race will take place over 102 laps.
With five practice sessions, qualifying and shootout races on Friday and Saturday along with the main event on Sunday, you’re in for an octane-fuelled weekend. Plus, you’ll get to enjoy the glamorous Porsche Carrera Cup, Aussie racing cars and the Trans Ams.

6. Grenache & Gourmet Festival
When: 19 September – 6 October
Where: McLaren Vale
When you think of McLaren Vale does shiraz and cabernet sauvignon come to mind? Don’t forget those light, fruity, spicy (and delicious) grenache wines. The Grenache & Gourmet Festival hits this spectacular part of the Fleurieu Peninsula again and what a treat McLaren Vale has in store. Lending its ‘G’ to GSM blends, grenache is known for being an excellent food partner and here you’ve come to the right place.
Over 18 flavour-filled days, experience world-class wines and seasonal foods and get to know grenache with meet-the-maker masterclasses. You’ll hear the stories behind each bottle and then have a chance to pair it with your favourite woodfired pizza or a crispy duck confit.

7. City-Bay Fun Run
When: 21 September
Where: Adelaide CBD to Glenelg
Run, jog, walk, skip, wheelchair… the choice is yours at SA’s famous City-Bay Fun Run. Bring your friends and have a blast – you don’t have to be a star athlete to enjoy yourself. But if you’re in it to win it, you can choose between a 3km, 6km, 12km or half marathon on this famous route from the city to the bay.
Best of all, the event raises funds for athletics in South Australia. Who knows, you might be helping a future Olympic gold medallist. And there’s more good news. RAA members can save on registration fees. Entries close on 20 September but get yours in by 31 August to avoid late fees.

8. Nature Festival
When: 26 September – 12 October
Where: Various locations
Spending time in nature is good for you and what better way to experience the best of SA’s natural environment than with a festival? At the Nature Festival – now in its sixth year – you can unplug and rewild with guided walks and eco-tours.
With more than 400 nature-inspired events, be awed by art, music and workshops. Discover valuable ways to connect with the land and natural world through Aboriginal cultural events. You’ll also find plenty of food, music and wine, with a choice of free and family-friendly events.
