Our seven best camping spots

Pitch a tent and explore SA’s great outdoors at these seven stunning campsites.

1. Kuitpo Forest, Fleurieu Peninsula

Like an enchanted scene straight out of a fairytale, Kuitpo Forest (pictured above) is a magical plantation of towering pines and ginormous gums. Chookarloo campground, found within the forest, offers 23 sites to pitch a tent for a small fee. You’ll also find timber shelters, fire pits and plenty of shade. And we promise, Little Red Riding Hood was just unlucky – there are no big, bad wolves in this forest.

2. Talia Caves, Eyre Peninsula

With few creature comforts (no running water or bathroom facilities), this free campsite is as bush as it gets. The pay-off for roughing it? Waking up to the ocean views south of the campground. Be careful where you set up camp though as Talia Beach is known for its strong rips and big waves.

3. Plush’s Bend, Riverland

Leave the houseboat on the river. There are several secluded camping spots along the Murray River, such as Plush’s Bend near Renmark – a short drive from the town centre. There’s a spot for tents and another separate area for vans right by the riverside, and even two flushing toilets nearby (score!)

4. Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park, Flinders Ranges

Twinkle, twinkle little star, how I wonder… well, it’s no wonder Ikara-Flinders Ranges National Park in South Australia’s outback makes it on the list. There are 10 campgrounds dotted around the park, which is high above sea level to make it a spectacular spot for stargazing.

5. Tanunda Discovery Park, Barossa Valley

Sleeping on the ground in the middle of nowhere doesn’t appeal to everyone. Decked out like plush hotel rooms with king-size beds, heating, WiFi and even kitchenettes, this glampground is, well, glamourous. While we’re sure you love spending time with the kids, these eco-luxe tents are for adults only. So, pop the bubbly and put your feet up.
