SA’s speeding hotspots

A fixed speed camera on the South Eastern Freeway caught the most speeding motorists during the 2024-25 financial year, nabbing more than 6000 drivers.
According to SA Police data, almost $5 million in fines were handed out to drivers caught by the Leawood Gardens camera at the bottom of the South Eastern Freeway.
The top speed recorded at the site was 137km/h – almost 40km/h over the speed limit. Almost four in five offences were for drivers exceeding the speed limit by 10km/h to 19km/h.
The fixed camera on Tapleys Hill Road at West Beach caught the second-most drivers speeding, recording more than 4000 offences and $2 million in fines.
West Lakes Boulevard (West Lakes) was third with 2001 offences and $1 million in fines, followed by Goodwood Road (Pasadena) and Montague Road (Ingle Farm).
RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches says motorists on the South Eastern Freeway need to be aware of speed limit changes.
“If you’re travelling on the South Eastern Freeway, speed limits can potentially be reduced, sometimes due to roadworks or conditions that aren’t immediately obvious, such as a breakdown,” he says.
“This speed camera detects motorists exceeding electronically reduced speed limits, so it’s important to be aware of the signed speed limit at all times.”

Mobile speed cameras catching motorists
Three of the top four mobile speed camera locations with the highest number of speeding drivers fined were in the Burnside council area.
Grant Avenue at Rose Park recorded 2040 offences and $1.2 million in fines to take out top spot, while the North-South Motorway at Dry Creek came in second with 1654 offences and $1.2 million in fines.
Back in Adelaide’s eastern suburbs, Bevington Road at Glenunga and Conyngham Street at Glenside were next on the list, combining for more than 2500 offenders caught speeding.
Matt says drivers need to take care and slow down, with speeding contributing to about 20 per cent of fatal crashes on South Australian roads.
“Seeing thousands of drivers caught speeding each year is a stark reminder of how many people are gambling with their own safety and the safety of innocent road users around them,” he says.
“Speeding isn’t just about breaking the law; it gives you less time to react and dramatically increases the likelihood and severity of a collision.”
Four of the top five mobile sites catching speeding motorists had undergone speed limit changes in recent years.
“It’s critical that drivers pay attention to signs, as speed limits may have recently changed,” Matt says
“Some in-car GPS systems don’t always update quickly enough when speed zones change, so relying solely on technology can catch people out.”
