Poor roads making drivers feel unsafe
A recent sa move poll found that 73 per cent of motorists regularly drive on a road that makes them feel unsafe.
The most common safety concern among those motorists who feel unsafe is poorly maintained roads.
Of the 1624 people who they drive on a road that makes them feel unsafe, 1085 said it was due to the road conditions. More than 500 people said it was due to dangerous road users.
The results come as RAA launches its 2024 Risky Roads survey. The survey – which is open until 4 December on the RAA website – gives South Australians the opportunity to nominate dangerous roads or intersections.
RAA Senior Traffic Engineer Matt Vertudaches says the statewide survey aims to identify unsafe roads and intersections.
“The results will then be used by RAA’s traffic experts make recommendations to road authorities and State Government,” Matt says.
“Our Risky Roads survey is the biggest piece of community research we undertake every couple years to inform our infrastructure priorities that we present to Government and road authorities on a regular basis.”
Since the last Risky Roads survey, 19 of the top 20 metro and regional roads have had at least some work done or a planning study announced.
“Nominations can be made by all South Australians for a range of issues – from poorly maintained road surfaces through to dangerous road user behaviour or unsafe intersection design,” Matt says.
“The local knowledge that drivers have about the roads and intersections they travel on every day is invaluable and helps us identify areas that have an increased risk of serious crashes occurring.”
