Unfortunate single-vehicle incidents

Sometimes having an accident in your car can be embarrassing, other times they come as more of a shock. Whatever the emotion, single-vehicle crashes can be frustrating, and cause disruption to your everyday life.
There are many types of single-vehicle crashes. In instances where there’s no other party involved, you can lodge a claim under your comprehensive car insurance policy. If you’re not quite sure how to go about it, RAA’s claims team can help you through the process.
I reversed out of my driveway and heard THUNK! I’d hit my neighbour’s fence.
Hitting an object was the most common single-vehicle incident in 2021, with more than 8500 claims lodged with RAA Insurance. If you damage your own property, it’s straight-forward – just contact your insurer.
However, if you’ve damaged someone else’s property, let the owner know, give them your contact details and get in touch with your insurer. When making your claim, it’s helpful to provide information about the property you damaged along with the owner’s contact details.

I was driving on a country road and hit a kangaroo, significantly damaging my car.
Kangaroos are notorious for colliding with cars and sometimes they catch you on the hop. In fact, RAA received more than 2000 claims in 2021 for motorists who’d hit an animal.
Contact the RSPCA to handle the injured animal. A frightened animal could lash out to protect itself and cause you serious harm. Stay in your car if it’s safe to do so until assistance arrives.

I backed out of a carpark and almost hit a trolley, but slammed on the brakes just in time.
That was a close shave. Luckily, no damage was done to the car or shopping trolley. However, not everyone is so lucky and, unfortunately, sometimes become involved in a crash. RAA Insurance received 10,751 single-vehicle claims in 2021.
Sometimes crashes can’t be avoided. However, you can mitigate risk by following the road rules, adhering to good driving practices and being aware of your surroundings. Hopefully, you won’t need to make a single-vehicle claim.
