Red-light hotspots revealed
A West Terrace intersection holds the unenviable title of most red-lighter runners in Adelaide, new SAPOL data has revealed.
The fixed camera at the intersection of West Terrace and Glover Avenue in the city caught 1580 drivers running red lights last financial year, costing the drivers more than $1 million in fines, (including the Victims of Crime levy).
According to the SAPOL expiation data analysed by RAA, more than 37,400 drivers were caught running red lights in 2023-24. As a result, more than $23 million in fines were handed out to motorists.
The fixed camera at Marion Road and Cross Road caught the second-most motorists (1337), followed by Grand Junction and Port Wakefield Road (1320).
Reducing road trauma
RAA Senior Manager of Safety and Infrastructure is reminding drivers to take care around busy roads to reduce road trauma.
“Drivers are required to stop when traffic lights turn yellow unless it’s unsafe to do so,” Charles says.
“Impatience and distraction are likely the leading causes of red-light running, which is unacceptable and puts other road users and pedestrians at risk.
“Driving through a red light runs the risk of a collision with other cars if they’re entering the intersection or completing a turn and expecting you to come to a stop as required.”
More than four drivers per day, on average, are being caught driving through red lights on the corner of West Terrace and Glover Avenue.
“There are similar numbers at other intersections, which is concerning,” Charles says. “Stay focused on the task of driving and look out for vulnerable road users such as cyclists and pedestrians.”
