Most common insurance claims

Broken window? Theft? Surprisingly, neither tops the list of most common home and contents insurance claims. So, what does?

From more than 65,500 RAA Home and Contents insurance claims in the past three-and-a-half years, about a third were for accidental damage, followed by storm damage (20 per cent) and water/liquid damage (15 per cent).

RAA Insurance Head of Claims Jess Lyons says accidental damage cover can give peace of mind and recommends policyholders check with their insurer to see if they’re covered.
“Even when we’re extra careful, accidents happen and our belongings may need to be fixed or replaced,” Jess says.
“Accidental damage makes up the highest number of household claims, so it’s worth checking to see if you have this optional cover on your policy.”
Regular monitoring and maintenance around the home may help avoid damage from storms and water. Jess says clogged gutters, drains and downpipes are common causes of water damage at home, but with ongoing maintenance, issues can be prevented.
“Clear your gutters and downpipes regularly, especially ahead of wet weather, and make sure stormwater is draining away from the house,” Jess says.
“It’s also a good idea to have regular roof inspections and air-conditioning services to help prevent issues.”
