Mind your car park Ps and Qs

Christmas is only a few weeks away, and everyone is rushing to the shops to stock up on food, drinks and presents for the festive season.

With all those shoppers, traffic in car parks at Adelaide’s many shopping centres is often busier than our major roads during peak period.

The same rules you follow on the road also apply in car parks and Police can still book you for traffic offences. We all have a responsibility to do the right thing.

On top of that, potential hazards lurk in all shapes and sizes, from pedestrians and cars, to motorcycles and even mobility scooters.

Don’t forget discarded trolleys lying idle in car park spaces or overflowing from return bays. You really must keep an eye out.

Check out the video below for some handy parking tips that’ll help maintain the festive cheer during the holiday season.

December is the worst month for car park crash claims according to RAA Insurance data. On average, there are 684 claims for collisions during the Christmas period, a 3.5 per cent jump from the monthly average of 660.

The damage bill for bingles has also spiked, up 36 per-cent from an average of  $2480 in 2016 to $3377 last year. It could be costly if you don’t mind your manners.

Car parks are a shared space, so give way to pedestrians, don’t be a Christmas Grinch this festive season and remember to consider fellow drivers. Stay calm, be patient and remain focussed to avoid any nasty surprises. Hopefully, others will pay it forward.

We want you and your family to get home safe and sound – and we’re sure you do, too.
