Breaking down language barriers
Travelling overseas is an exciting experience, but visiting a non-English speaking country can be overwhelming, particularly if you don’t know the local language. There are however, a few ways you can make the trip less daunting.
Your first stop might be the app store. There are many phone apps available that’ll automatically translate for you – some even allow you to say a phrase and it’ll convert from English to the language you need.
If the local needs to respond, they can speak into the phone as well, and it will translate into English for you.
You should also pick up a phrase book and learn a few words of the local language before you leave Australia.
Learning “please”, “thank you”, and “I don’t speak…” could help if you find yourself in a sticky situation. Locals will appreciate the effort if you know a few phrases. Remember, RAA members get 10% off phrase books in RAA shops.
If all else fails, patience and a simple smile can go a long way, and the locals might open up to you a little more despite the language barrier.
Final tip: If you’ve got an allergy, do some research and create flashcards in the country’s national language, with an image to help get your message across.
