5 events to mark on the calendar

The festive season may be over, but the fun has just begun. Here are the events we’re kicking off with in 2023.

1. Adelaide International

When: 1–14 January

Where: Memorial Drive Park, Adelaide

Who needs Wimbledon when Adelaide has its very own tennis tournament? Head courtside to see tennis stars from around the world, like 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic and the women’s world number two Ons Jabeur, battle it out at Adelaide International. This year, there are two tournaments for the first time – that means double the fun.

2. Family Fish Day

When: 7 January

Where: Streaky Bay Jetty

Family, fun and fishing – sounds like an ideal way to spend the first few days of 2023. Cast a line from Streaky Bay Jetty at Family Fish Day and cross your fingers for a decent catch. This fishing competition awards the best angler for reeling in the heaviest fish, as well as different species.

3. Santos Tour Down Under

When: 13–22 January

Where: All over SA

The world’s best cyclists take to the streets for the Santos Tour Down Under, racing through Adelaide’s suburbs and surrounding towns. The fun doesn’t stop when the day’s racing finishes. Visit the Tour Village or head to one of many lively street parties for a bite to eat, a glass of local brew and fashion parades.

4. THINK! Road Safety Family Day

When: 17 January at 1pm

Where: Thebarton Road Safety Centre, Port Road

Let’s stay safe on the roads this year. To help get the road safety message out, SA Police and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport are hosting THINK! Road Safety Family Day during Santos Tour Down Under to promote safe cycling. There’s also a mock roadway where children can learn about the road rules and pedestrian safety. Bring your own bicycle or borrow one when you arrive. No bookings or tickets are required.

5. Atkins Farm Sunflower Picking

When: 28 January – 28 February

Where: Meadows, Adelaide Hills

The new year is off to a sunny start. Wander the golden sunflower fields at Atkins Farm in the Adelaide Hills and pick a bunch or two of locally grown flowers to brighten your home. The farm opened in 2021 and the idea to plant sunflowers grew from the owners’ love of gardening. Fun fact: sunflowers are the only flower with the word, you guessed it, ‘flower’ in its name. They’re also a symbol of faith, loyalty and adoration. Here’s to attracting all three in 2023.
