Safety app keeping SA’s boaties on course
South Australian recreational boaties can now access real-time, personalised safety alerts and rules specific to their location with a popular free mobile app.
The Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT) has partnered with the DECKEE app to provide weather forecasts, safety equipment requirements, and maps and warnings specific to local waters.
South Australia joins New South Wales, Victoria and Western Australia as the latest state to adopt the system that is also useful for divers, kayakers and jet-skiers.
Using technology to create a safer boating experience was identified as a key action in the state’s 2025 Recreational Boating Safety Strategy.
As a result, the integration of DECKEE with real-time, South Australian-specific information and alerts is welcome news to the boating community.
With more than 300,000 South Aussies holding recreational boating licences and around 50,000 registered water vessels, the mobile safety app is set to become boaties’ new, reliable first mate.
Features of the app include:
- Live location-sharing with family and friends
- Real-time maps showing restricted areas and sanctuary zones
- Port and harbour boundaries
- Area speed limits
- Incident reporting
- Live web-cam footage so users can see the conditions for themselves before setting out.
DECKEE will also automatically log trips so users can look back on past adventures.
DIT Manager for Marine Safety and Compliance Gordon Panton says the partnership with DECKEE will provide simple, easy and relevant safety information to boaties.
“This collaboration allows us to deliver real-time safety alerts and data straight into the hands of boaties, ensuring our community is better informed and prepared,” he says.
“Our mission is to make sure everyone who goes out on the water returns home safely.”
