A whole new world of imagination is on the horizon with Disney announcing plans to build a new theme park and resort in the Middle East.

Mickey Mouse and friends will welcome fans to the world’s seventh magical theme park resort with Disney’s first venture in the Middle East, joining Warner Bros World, Seaworld and Ferrari World on Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.

The site will be developed and built by Miral, the city’s leading creator of immersive destinations and experiences, with Walt Disney Imagineers leading creative design.

Opening dates, attractions, rides and admission are yet to be announced, but Walt Disney Company CEO Robert A. Iger says Disney Abu Dhabi will be authentically Disney and distinctively Emirati.

“[It will be] an oasis of extraordinary Disney entertainment at this crossroads of the world that will bring to life our timeless characters and stories in many new ways,” he says. [It] will become a source of joy and inspiration for the people of this vast region to enjoy for generations to come.”

The resort – hailed as a “new frontier in theme park development” by Disney Experiences Chairman, Josh D’Amaro – will have a waterfront location and be the most advanced and interactive development in the Disney portfolio.

There’s no need to hitch a ride on a magic carpet to get to Disney in the Middle East. With Abu Dhabi one of the biggest transit hubs in the world, travellers can treat themselves to a Disney experience during an extended layover.

In the meantime, fairytale folk can pursue new horizons a little closer to home. Experience the wonder and meet all the cherished characters onboard a Disney cruise, departing Sydney or Melbourne. Adventure is out there.
