What is a whole home water filtration system?

Many of us have water filters connected to a kitchen tap, but have you considered installing a water filtration system for your whole home?

SA Water treat water sourced from the Murray River and reservoirs that ends up in our bathrooms, kitchens, laundries, gardens and pools.

And while South Australian tap water is safe to drink, it can still contain chemicals and other impurities.

A tap filter in the kitchen can improve the quality, clarity and taste of our drinking water, but what about the rest of the house?

A filter for the whole home

Complete Home Filtration can install a filtration system that supplies filtered water to your whole property.

Complete Home Filtration founder Suzanne Dodds has been in the water filtration business for 17 years and believes everyone should have the opportunity to drink, shower, bathe, cook, and wash clothes with pure, freshly filtered, chemical-free water from every tap and outlet in their home.

“There are many different things in water, like chlorine, chlorine by-products including trihalomethanes, micro-plastics, and potentially agricultural runoff like pesticides and herbicides,” Suzanne says.

How the system works

A Complete Home Filtration system uses a multi-stage process, starting with a pre-filter that removes sand, silt, rust and other sediment.

The next stage softens the water by removing calcium and magnesium; dissolved minerals that limit the effectiveness of soap, detergent and shampoo. These are the minerals that place Adelaide water in the moderately hard category, with some regional areas having even harder water.

These mineral elements can also cause a build-up of limescale in the plumbing that can reduce the lifespan of appliances and hot water systems.

The sediment you see in kettles and on shower screens is mineral residue left behind when tap water evaporates. Hard water can also leave your hair feeling dry and coarse.

The next step in the filtration process removes nearly all of the chlorine, as well as pesticides, heavy metals and other contaminants.

“Chlorine can strip your skin and hair of natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and flare-ups of skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis,” Suzanne says.

“There’s good bacteria on our skin that helps keep it supple, plus we have good bacteria in our digestive system. When you’re ingesting chlorine or showering, it can disrupt the balance of these useful bacteria.”

Harnessing the benefits

By installing a Complete Home Filtration system, you’ll no longer need other water filters inside your house. Kitchen tap filters sometimes deliver water slowly, but Suzanne says a Complete Home Filtration system can supply water throughout your home at up to 48 litres per minute, while also helping keep the pipes clean.

“Filtration not only improves water quality, but by preventing sediment and limescale build-up, it can ensure an uninterrupted flow through the plumbing,” Suzanne says.

However, if you want the extra protection of a reverse osmosis filter attached to a tap in the kitchen, this can be added to your whole home system.

Complete Home Filtration can arrange a free consultation to determine which system best suits your needs, based on factors like local water quality – which is tested on-site – water usage, and any other specific requirements. The consultant will also help determine the best location for your Complete Home Filtration unit.

Installation is carried out by licensed plumbers with a knowledge of home water supply infrastructure and filtration.

Depending on water quality and usage, filters are replaced between six to12 months, with Complete Home Filtration offering a service that notifies customers when filters are due to be changed.

Those of us familiar with the clean, clear water delivered through tap water filters in the kitchen would unlikely go back to unfiltered water.

By installing a Complete Home Filtration whole-home water filtration system, that same water quality will be available throughout the house for cooking, washing clothes and dishes, cleaning teeth and showering.

“Not only can you enjoy better tasting water, you may well see improvements in your skin and hair, plus those expensive appliances might last a few years longer,” Suzanne says.
