To store or not to store? When it comes to pairing a home battery unit with a solar system, there’s really no question. The benefits can be great, but there are a few important factors to consider before you purchase.   A home battery storage system allows you to use stored solar energy when the sun isn’t shining, so it’s a great option if you use the bulk of your energy at night. Whether you’re thinking about adding a battery to your existing home solar system or contemplating installing a solar and battery package from the get-go, our RAA Solar team answer some FAQs to help you make the right decision for your situation.  

Can I add a battery to my existing solar system?

Yes, but first ask yourself:

• Does my current system produce enough excess energy to store in a battery, for use overnight?
• Do I use enough energy to justify the costs that go with installing a home battery?

RAA Solar experts can help you fully understand the value of upgrading to a home battery system, and help you calculate how long it would take to pay for itself. One big factor to consider when you’re doing the sums on whether a home battery system makes sense for you is your current feed in tariff (FiT). It’s important to note, as it could change after your battery’s installed. Also, take into account the amount of energy the battery you’re looking at can store and the total savings it will deliver. If the sums add up, adding a battery to your solar system can save you money, contribute to your energy independence and reduce your carbon footprint.  

Can I get financial support from the government?

The SA Government’s Home Battery Scheme continues to save homeowners thousands of dollars. Right now, the scheme’s capped at a maximum subsidy of $3000. The subsidy will be applied to your solar and battery storage package price.  

How do I know what size home battery I need?

Much like the size of your solar system, this will depend on your energy consumption, which is shaped by things like whether you’re at home all day or not. We work with expert engineers, accredited installers and suppliers to ensure the batteries we install will meet your needs.  

Will a home battery power my place during a blackout?

Yes, but the system must be set up to do so. All combined solar and battery storage packages purchased through RAA include emergency backup power capability if there’s a blackout. This can be particularly handy if you live in an area that’s susceptible to power interruptions. The battery might not have the capacity to provide backup power to your whole house, but we’ll work with you during installation to prioritise your critical circuits, which generally include the fridge, your phone, modem and some key lights.  

Are home battery systems safe?

Generally, yes – but this can depend on the type of system and if it’s installed properly. Before you make a final decision, consider the quality and standards of both the battery and your installation partner. The old saying goes: if something seems too good to be true, it probably is – so just beware of cheap deals. Check that the battery systems your supplier sells have been independently assessed, to ensure their safety, quality and performance. The latest regulatory requirements and installation standards must be met during the battery installation process.  

When’s the best time to install a home battery?

Do it once, do it right. Our experience shows the best time to install a home battery system is when you first install solar.  Integrated solar and battery systems see the greatest return on investment, compared to adding a battery to an existing solar system.
