The MG5 – which last year received a zero-star safety rating from ANCAP – has been reassessed by the safety authority and received an improved three stars.

First introduced to Australia in August 2023, the MG5’s most recent ANCAP rating follows safety-related enhancements made to vehicles built from November 2024.

The zero-star safety rating was due to poor occupant protection and the absence of common safety features such as seatbelt pre-tensioners and load-limiters, lane support and blind-spot monitoring systems.

There were also limitations to autonomous emergency braking systems in models built between March 2023 and September 2024.

The updates

The updated MG 5 now offers some of the safety features it was lacking in earlier models.

Seatbelt pre-tensioners are now standard front and rear outboard seats, and the avoidance technology has been upgraded to include autonomous braking and lane-support systems.

ANCAP put the M5 through a fresh round of independent tests to see how the upgrades stacked up.

Seatbelt reminders have also been fitted to all seats.

New test results

The frontal offset and full-width crash tests were performed to see how effective the new seatbelt pre-tensioners and load limiters were in reducing occupant injury.

Additional whiplash and pedestrian tests were also undertaken, along with a full range of on-track collision avoidance performance tests.

The results of these tests, along with results from tests in 2023, saw the updated MG5 – built from November 2023 – receive a three-star ANCAP safety rating.
