7 of SA’s best bakeries

Can you imagine a summer road trip without a stop at the bakery? You can’t can you. It doesn’t matter where you’re driving, from the Adelaide Hills or Fleurieu Peninsula to KI or the Barossa, a summer cruise isn’t complete without a visit to the local bakery.   You might be a custard tart connoisseur or an apple turnover aficionado. Maybe you’re a traditionalist and devour a pie or pasty. Whether you’re a vanilla slice enthusiast or go bonkers for a banoffee pie, SA has a plethora of top-notch bakeries. We’re unable to list them all but here are some of our favourites.

1. Port Elliot Bakery, Fleurieu Peninsula

On weekends and public holidays, it’s common to see a line stretching out the door of this popular bakery. You’ll find all your fan favourites, from juicy sausage rolls and chunky mushroom and steak pies to creamy beestings.   Before you visit the many attractions on the Fleurieu Peninsula, check out Port Elliot Bakery’s Facebook page. Here you’ll find the bakery’s doughnut of the month. Recently they’ve featured Cherry Ripe, Caramilk, and white chocolate and Raspberry cheesecake. Beware though, these delectable delights aren’t for the faint-hearted – consider sharing with a friend.

2. Tanunda Bakery, Barossa Valley

The Barossa is famous for wineries like Yalumba, Seppeltfield and Jacob’s Creek, but it’s also home to a world-class bakery.   At the Tanunda Bakery you’ll find all the usual classics as well as traditional German breads, pretzels and Bienenstich (bee sting). While the kransky isn’t traditionally German, the Tanunda Bakery still sells the sausage wrapped in exceptional flaky puff pastry.

3. Clare Rise Bakery 1895, Clare Valley

If you’re looking for a seasonal menu, Clare Rise Bakery 1895 is the place for you. Located in a stone cottage built in 1895, this bakery prides itself in using local produce, right down to the stone-milled flour which is sourced from Clare.   Clare Rise Bakery features fruits like quandongs and rhubarb on its menu, however, you’ll still find the classic meat and potato pie. This baked delight is filled with chunky steak, mince and gravy and topped with creamy mash and a golden parmesan crust.
