The mobile phone rule catching motorists out

South Australian motorists are still getting caught driving distracted by mobile phone detection cameras.

In fact, about 30,000 fines were handed out in the first three months of the cameras operating.

There’s also confusion around how you can and can’t use your mobile phone when you’re driving.

Picture this: your phone, which is connected to the car by Bluetooth, rings while you’re at the wheel. You answer using the steering wheel controls, but the phone is resting on your lap while chatting. Can you be fined? Yes, you can.

Other than being in your pocket while driving, your phone can’t rest on any part of your body, including your lap or shoulder.
