3 home renos you should leave to the pros

Looking to install a new tub for the bathroom, need to fix a light switch or undertake some other home renos? If you’re thinking about doing it yourself, think again. Here’s why.
1. Plumbing
If you’re renovating your bathroom or laundry, you want to make sure the plumbing and waterproofing are done correctly. Plumbing faults or leaks can cause extensive damage that’s expensive to repair. A leak may not only cause water damage in the bathroom, but it can also impact the integrity of the structure or cause mould and mildew.
So, click pause on that YouTube tutorial and call a qualified, licenced and insured plumber to perform the job.
2. Electrical
ZAP! That’s the sound of you being electrocuted like a mozzie flying into a bug zapper. Maybe you decided to install a light switch yourself or do a DIY repair job on that power socket.
You should never do any electrical work around your home as you risk a house fire, electrocution or even death. The task requires an electrician who knows the proper procedures and has the right tools, knowledge and licences in place.
3. Removing walls
Grabbing a sledgehammer and knocking down a wall to do some renos and make your home more open plan might sound like a nice idea, but it could have dire consequences. If your house was built before the 1990s, the walls could contain deadly asbestos.
You could also be knocking down a load-bearing wall, which can impact your home’s structural integrity. Put down your safety goggles and sledgehammer and call in an expert with the engineering know-how to tell you if the wall is load-bearing and to talk you through your options.
