What’s up with the Mike Turtur Bikeway?

The tram service to Glenelg is now closed until January due to the construction of three overpasses as part of the Tram Grade Separation Projects. But what about the Mike Turtur Bikeway that runs beside it?

The Mike Turtur Bikeway is Adelaide’s busiest cycling route and is popular with both recreational and commuting cyclists.

The two new tram overpasses being built over Marion/Cross Road and Morphett Road, together with the replacement of the South Road overpass, have resulted in the temporary closure of much of the bikeway.

If you’re travelling from the CBD, you can still access the bikeway along the normal route beside Peacock Road and King William Road.

After crossing Goodwood Road, nothing’s changed until the end of Railway Terrace South, Goodwood.

Near Forestville Reserve, the two archways under the tram line will be closed for upgrading until early 2026, which also affects access through a section of the reserve.

So, you’ll need to:

  • Bear left onto Devon Street South, then
  • Right onto Victoria Street, and cross the train line
  • Right onto Foster Street
  • At the end of Foster Street, walk your bike through the Brownhill Creek underpass.

Exit Forestville Reserve to Norman Terrace. Follow Norman Terrace across Leah Street, then cross the tramline at Black Forest tram stop pedestrian crossing, and follow Aroha Terrace to South Road.

Beyond South Road

Follow the footpath south on South Road to the pedestrian crossing in front of Black Forest Primary School.

After crossing South Road, follow Pleasant Avenue back to the bikeway.

Beyond Winifred Avenue/Beckman Street, much of the bikeway is closed until well after Morphett Road. So it’s probably best to cross the tramline at Winifred Avenue/Beckman Street and wiggle through the back streets to the Westside Bikeway on the northern side of Anzac Highway.

  1. Turn left onto Glengyle Terrace
  2. Turn right on Baldock Street, then
  3. Left on Wheaton Road
  4. Left on Clayton Avenue
  5. Right on Mabel Street
  6. Left onto Marion Road footpath to the pedestrian crossing
  7. Cross Marion Road, then turn right on the footpath
  8. Left on Elizabeth Avenue
  9. Right on Mornington Avenue
  10. Cross Anzac Highway at the pedestrian crossing, then left onto the footpath
  11. Right on Zither Street, then left onto the Westside Bikeway

Follow the Westside Bikeway until it meets Dunbar Terrace on the south side of Anzac Highway, and either follow Dunbar Terrace to Brighton Road, or cross the tramline at the Glengowrie tram stop to rejoin the Mike Turtur Bikeway.

Plan B

Follow the Westside Bikeway between the CBD and the Bay.
