What’s happening with the tram?

Tram on King William Street.

Tram crossings on Marion Road, Cross Road and Morphett Road are set to be replaced with overpasses to ease traffic congestion and reduce delays.

Early works and upgrades to surrounding intersections are already underway and will continue through to 2026.

The overpasses

There’ll be two new tram overpasses – one over Morphett Road and one spanning both Marion and Cross roads. Construction will include the Mike Turtur Bikeway for cyclists and pedestrians.

During construction, temporary detours will be established for Mike Turtur Bikeway traffic.

The project includes combining tram stop 12 (Morphett Road) with the existing Morphettville Racecourse stop, and moving stop 13 (Glengowrie) closer to Morphett Road.

The existing South Road tram overpass will also be rebuilt in preparation for the Torrens to Darlington (T2D) tunnel, which will have an exit/entry point at that location.

Planning includes open public spaces beneath each overpass.

Planned road upgrades

Anzac Highway/Morphett Road

  • The left-turn lane on Anzac Highway approaching Morphett Road will be extended.
  • Heading north on Morphett Road, two dedicated right-turn lanes will be installed for traffic turning onto Anzac Highway.
  • Two through lanes will be available for traffic crossing Anzac Highway.
  • Heading south on Morphett Road, two dedicated through lanes and a dedicated right-turn lane onto Anzac Highway will be built.

Anzac Highway/Marion Road

  • Heading north on Marion Road, two dedicated right-turn lanes onto Anzac Highway will be installed.
  • Heading south-west on Anzac Highway, there’ll be two dedicated left-turn lanes with traffic lights onto Marion Road.

Marion Road/Cross Road

  • Heading south on Marion Road, a dedicated left-turn lane onto Cross Road will be installed.
  • Heading west on Cross Road, a dedicated left-turn lane onto Marion Road will be installed.

The Tram Grade Separation Projects (TGSP) Alliance team, who are undertaking the work, will provide notifications of roads affected as work progresses.

TGSP is comprised of construction companies McConnell Dowell and CPB Contractors, designer Mott MacDonald, Arup and Aurecon, and the Department for Infrastructure and Transport (DIT).

Tram storage

Work will prevent tram access to the Glengowrie Tram Depot on Maxwell Terrace, so a temporary storage facility will be established in the existing tram corridor beside Peacock Road, south of the South Terrace tram stop.

When the project is completed, trams will only be able to access the Glengowrie Tram Depot from the Glenelg side, but can switch to the Adelaide-bound track once they exit the depot.

When

The tramline is expected to be closed between the city (South Terrace) and Glenelg from the second half of 2025 to late January 2026. Substitute buses will replace trams between South Terrace and Glenelg.

Trams will continue to operate between Adelaide Entertainment Centre and South Terrace and Adelaide Botanic Garden on North Terrace.

Funding

The $400 million Marion Road and Cross Road overpass project will be funded equally by the State and Federal Governments.

The $200 million Morphett Road overpass project will also be split 50:50. The South Road overpass rebuild is part of the $15.4 billion T2D Project, which is jointly funded by the State and Federal Governments.
