The Adelaide Fringe program is just shy of 1600 shows. You’d need to see 42 shows every single day to catch them all and, without a time machine, that’s… well, impossible.

That’s where we come in. We’ve narrowed the lineup down to some of the standout shows, so you don’t have to.

Not only that, if you are an RAA member, you can enjoy each of them and get a discount.

So, what sparks your Fringe? Whether you love comedy, music, theatre, circus, or something completely unexpected, there’s a show waiting to become your new favourite.

Looking for a laugh

What: Danielle Walker: Bittersweet
Where: Le Cascadeur at The Garden of Unearthly Delights
When: 9–15 March

The Adelaide Fringe is bursting at the seams with side-splitting comedy, including Danielle Walker’s Australian premiere of Bittersweet. Known for her appearances on Taskmaster, Gold Diggers and Thank God You’re Here, the award-winning comedian’s new show doesn’t “put lipstick on a pig”. A little bit country farmer and a little bit big-city charm, you’ll just have to see for yourself what makes this show bittersweet.

Music to your ears

What: Gigs @ Gluttony presented by Pirate Life
Where: The Fantail (Open-Air) at Gluttony
When: 19 February – 22 March

Turn up the volume on your Fringe soundtrack with Gluttony’s live music program. Presented by Pirate Life, Gigs @ Gluttony is a mixtape of local favourites, international stars, cult bands and seasoned DJs. Relive the iconic sounds of the ’90s at Anthems: Old School Edition, catch the long-awaited return of indie legends Faker, or be moved by the powerful vocals of First Nations singer-songwriter Adrian Eagle. With a lineup as diverse as the Fringe itself, there’s a gig to suit everyone.

Faker returns to Adelaide after almost 15 years.
Free entertainment

What: The RAA Garden Party
Where: The Garden of Unearthly Delights
When: Every Sunday, 15 February – 22 March

Bring the whole family for an afternoon of fun in The Garden (pictured at top). Emceed by crowd favourites and showcasing the best Garden artists from across the globe, the RAA Garden Party will delight audiences of all ages. Best of all, it’s free. Come back each Sunday for a new lineup, because no two shows are ever the same.

Touring the regions

What: Ministry of Laughs: Fringe Comedy Roadshow
Where: Bordertown, Penola, Adelaide and Renmark
When: 13 February – 6 March

Some of the finest local and international comics hit the road to bring laughs from the city to the regions. Ministry of Laughs will tour the state, starting in Bordertown before heading to Penola and the Riverland via Adelaide. When the touring comedians arrive at Raidis Event Shed in Penola, the night will double as the kick-off to the Coonawarra Fringe suite of shows. RAA members can save on full-price tickets in Penola on Saturday 14 February, as well as a range of others, surrounded by the vineyards of SA’s oldest wine region.

Highbrow art and sculpture

What: Gluttony Sculpture Walk
Where: Gluttony parkland, Murlawirrapurka/Rymill Park
When: 19 February – 22 March

For the very first time – and completely free – you’re invited to stroll through the Adelaide Park Lands to discover the work of talented artists, from striking large-scale visual art installations to outdoor sculptures. The Gluttony Sculpture Walk is free to explore anytime that Gluttony is open, or grab a ticket for the free guided tour on 28 February. At the end of your stroll, cast your vote for your favourite to win the People’s Choice Award presented by Foodland – it’ll be a tough decision!

Something for the kids (and the young at heart)

What: The Alphabet of Awesome Science
Where: The Roundhouse at The Garden of Unearthly Delights
When: 24 February – 22 March

Science is fun and it’s even cooler to see it in action. Kids and parents alike will be gobsmacked and entertained by the onstage shenanigans of The Alphabet of Awesome Science. Race through the alphabet of fast facts, wily words and scientific surprises – including 26 quirky onstage demonstrations. From the hilarious to the messy (with a few explosions thrown in), this is a show the whole family will be talking about long after it’s over.

How can the human body even bend that way? With a splash of cabaret, a pinch of burlesque and simmering aerial artistry acts, this is a show that’ll keep you on the edge of your seat from start to finish.

The variety of cabaret

Returning to the Fringe for its second time, FLOP! proves that this show is anything but. Join The Voice finalist Arthur Hall as he showcases hidden gems from musicals that didn’t quite make it. From hidden gems in the failed Spiderman: Turn off the Dark, to songs that have outshone their shows (like My Funny Valentine from the unsuccessful Babe in Arms), Arthur pairs his impressive musicality (and occasional acrobatics) with charming insights into why these productions missed the mark.

Image: RAA/Mike Lockheart

At just 20 years old, South Australia’s very own Kai Allen is already making a name for himself in the Repco Supercars Championship.

The Mount Gambier-born rising star was the youngest Dunlop Super2 Series champion in 2023 and has already competed at Bathurst on several occasions.

In the lead up to the bp Adelaide Grand Final, we sat down to have a chat with the young Grove Racing driver.

sa move: What has been your biggest career highlight so far?

Kai: Being the youngest ever Super2 Series champion. That was a really cool one, marking my name down in history and doing it in front of my home crowd at the Adelaide 500 in 2023.

Equally, getting five podiums in my rookie season and making the second round of finals in the Repco Supercars Championship.

sa move: What do you enjoy most about racing in Adelaide?

Kai: Probably the nature of the track – it’s very fast, grippy and a cool style. You have to be on your game the entire race because your mirrors are centimetres from the walls. Your car is at its very limit.

Seeing the crowd in the grandstand as you come down the main straight is spectacular. There’s always a good atmosphere and I also have a lot of friends and family that come along.

It’s very special for me as a South Australian, and it’s such an iconic track.

sa move: Who was your idol or mentor as you moved through the junior ranks of motorsport?

Kai: My biggest mentor growing up was actually my dad. He’s the one that’s pushed me the whole way and been by my side teaching me what I need to know about racing, but also about business and setting myself up.

I’ve always admired Scott McLaughlin. I think his way he goes about his racing, the way that he approaches all the fans and all that stuff is really cool.

sa move: What’s your favourite thing to do in your hometown (Mount Gambier)?

Kai: For me, it’s catching up with family and friends. It’s always good. I love getting home. It grounds me a bit, and I can get away from the big city in Melbourne and catch up with my best mates down there, but also Mum and Dad and my sisters as well.

sa move: Where’s your favourite holiday spot?

Kai: Probably Robe. It’s not too far from Mount Gambier. We have a nice beach house we like to rent out over Christmas. I do a lot of travelling throughout the year, so I love to stay close to home over the festive season.

sa move: What are your goals for the future?

Kai: For me at the moment, it’s just doing the best I can in the Supercars and I obviously want to really win a championship – that’s my number one goal.

The bp Adelaide Grand Final hits Adelaide’s streets from 27–30 November.

Former MasterChef judge and 2025 CheeseFest Master of Fromage Matt Preston once penned an entire column about cheese.

He says, “Cheese is my Achilles heel. My weak spot, My precious. I struggle to find a cheese that I do not like.”

Matt isn’t alone in his love for cheese, with millions of people across the world loving the popular dairy product.

For the past 20 years cheese has been celebrated at South Australia’s very own CheeseFest, with this year’s event taking place on 18 and 19 October at Rundle Park/Kadlitpina.

MasterChef Australia champion and co-owner of Adelaide restaurants Fugazzi and Nido, Laura Sharrad will be teaching festival goers how to make ricotta gnocchi at the RAA Cooking Demonstration stage.

She says CheeseFest is a great opportunity to feature South Australian cheese as well as other local food and drink producers.

“It brings the South Australian food and wine community together to make one incredible showcase – it’s really exciting,” Laura says.

“The talent is really cool, and I think it’s just a really fun weekend celebrating what is so good about South Australia, and obviously cheese – everyone loves cheese.”

sa move: What would you pair with the brie?
Laura: My favourite thing is chilli honey with brie. It gives this little kick but then also the sweetness of the honey and the creaminess of the brie.

sa move: Hard or soft cheese?
Laura: I’m going to say soft.

sa move: What’s your guilty pleasure cheese dish?
I’d say four-cheese gnocchi – something I’m going to regret eating because it’s so indulgent.

For the curd nerds who like mozzarella, check out the main stage where the team from Vannella Cheese will compete in a live cheesemaking showdown.

They’ll stretch curds into silky mozzarella and handcraft cheeses from their classic Pugliese range, including burrata, nodini and treccine.

Vannella Cheese Creative Director Anthony Silvio says CheeseFest gives the Australian cheese industry its moment to shine.

“We can tell the unique stories of family owned and operated producers just like us,” he says.

“CheeseFest also lets us put the hard work of the farmers up on a pedestal and give foodies in South Australia the opportunity to show their appreciation.”

CheeseFest Director and cheesemaker Kris Lloyd AM says the event has grown so much since it started 20 years ago.

“CheeseFest 2025 marks 20 tasty years of celebrating the best in cheese, food and wine,” she says.

“We’ve grown to welcome cheesemakers from across the nation, and today we stand proudly as one of Australia’s favourite and most unique festivals – where Australia comes to meet its makers.”

RAA Bay to Birdwood is about to hit the road, with historic RAA patrol vehicles leading the parade from the coast to the Hills.

Now in its 45th year, 1500 vehicles will drive from West Beach to Birdwood on Sunday, 19 October, with RAA coming on board to support the event for the next three years as a major partner.

This isn’t the first time RAA has backed the iconic Bay to Birdwood, with RAA previously serving as naming rights partner in the late 1990s.

RAA Chief Executive Officer Nick Reade says the partnership is RAA’s way of supporting South Australia’s rich motoring heritage.

“As the state’s peak motoring body, RAA is thrilled to partner with an iconic motoring event that captures the hearts of so many South Australians,” Nick says.

“When it comes to motoring, we’ve been there from the beginning – founded in 1903 by motoring enthusiasts, passion for the motoring community is entrenched in our DNA.”

This year’s event includes the Concours d’Elegance, Preservation and EV Conversion awards, with judging based not only on the vehicles, but the authenticity of the entrant’s attire and accessories.

During the 67km parade, current RAA patrols will be on hand to provide road service for any cars that encounter mechanical problems on the day.

“While we’ve been supporting the Bay to Birdwood for several years, we thought putting our name to it as the RAA Bay to Birdwood was a fantastic way to honour the shared history of our organisation and motoring in South Australia,” Nick says.

“I encourage everyone to get involved with either the parade or the Finish Festival this year on 19 October – especially if you’re one of our 830,000 members.”

RAA members can save 20 per cent on entry to the RAA Bay to Birdwood Finish Festival, by entering their RAA member number and promocode.

Prior to the arrival of Europeans, the area inland from the sand dunes between Glenelg and the Port River was a seasonal wetland the Kaurna people called Witongga.

Fed by the River Torrens (Karrawirrparri), it provided a buffet of yabbies, mussels and assorted small game. The prolific reeds were used for basket weaving and making other handy items.

From the late 1830s, the fertile land was taken up by settler’s market gardens and orchards, but further development was hampered by swamps and regular flooding from the river.

There was only limited drainage to the sea through the Port and Patawalonga rivers. The River Torrens’ current course beneath Henley Beach Road and Tapleys Hill Road to the outlet didn’t exist at the time. More on that soon.

A remnant channel, now known as Grange Lakes, that linked the River Torrens to the Port River can still be seen running from Grange Road to West Lakes.

In the early days, Henley Beach – named after England’s Henley-on-Thames – was more of a weekend retreat than a residential burb. Suburban development in the area didn’t really get started until a moderate subdivision was laid out in the late 1870s.

Getting there

The first regular public transport to Henley Beach was a double-decker, horse-drawn tram service that began operating in 1882. Initially it terminated on Seaview Road in front of the Ramsgate Hotel, but it was later extended to Grange.

Horse-drawn trams at the Ramsgate Hotel, 1905. Image: State Library of South Australia, PRG 631/2/1605

Although the train from the city to Grange via Woodville was in action by 1882, it didn’t reach Henley Beach until 1894, running down Military Road from Grange to a terminal in front of the Henley Police Station’s current location.

The horse-drawn tram, which roughly followed the alignment of Henley Beach Road, was often stopped or delayed by flooding.

When trams switched to electric in 1909, an elevated viaduct was built along what’s now HMAS Australia Road, Henley Beach South, to help cross a particularly swampy area.

The train from Grange to Henley stopped running in 1957, and the trams came to a halt during the controversial shutting of all lines, except the Glenelg service, in 1958.

Scrubber car cleaning the viaduct rails, 1915.
The square

Opening its doors in Henley Square in 1897, the Ramsgate Hotel was the area’s second pub. The Henley Hotel further south opened in 1878.

Complete with fancy parapets, the Henley Kiosk became an instant hit with beachgoers when it opened in 1911. It was built by the State Government’s tram operator, the Municipal Transport Trust (MTT), to encourage tram trips to the beach.

Crowd at the Henley Kiosk, 1927.
Over the years its tenants have included Moby Dicks Tavern, a Chinese restaurant and an RSL clubroom. In 1986 it became home to one of Henley’s most popular eateries, the Thai Orchid restaurant, though the parapets are long gone.

The square’s had several makeovers through the years, with the most recent redevelopment undertaken in 2015.

Amusements

Henley Beach Jetty was completed in 1883. A 1915 upgrade included a three-storey pavilion, described in an Advertiser article as “luxuriantly furnished” with “electric lighting installed throughout.”

Busy day at Henley Jetty Pavilion, 1915.
There was a café on the ground floor, a music room and lounge on the next level, and a roof garden up top.

Sadly, a 1942 storm severely damaged the pavilion and it was demolished in 1945.

In 1934, an open-air, salt-water Olympic-size swimming pool was opened on the beachside of the lifesaving club’s current spot. Not only was it a popular summer hangout, it was also used for Henley High School swimming carnivals and served as a training facility for Dawn Fraser as she prepared for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics.

Over the years the pool was battered by storms until it was eventually closed and demolished in 1985. Three rescued starting blocks are cemented to the footpath south of the lifesaving club, standing as testament to this long-lost Henley icon.

Henley Swimming Pool, 1945.
Drained

Flooding of the Henley Beach hinterland – known by Europeans as the reed beds – continued to be a problem until the River Torrens was diverted and channelled from Lockleys to the sea. The Torrens Outlet at the Henley Beach South/West Beach boundary was opened in 1937, after three years of construction.

The troublesome wetlands soon drained, opening the way for extensive urban development, which boomed after World War II.

The rest, as they say, is history.

Wouldn’t you like to have fun? Even though the cost of living is threatening to tug the purse strings firmly shut, there’s more to life than eat, sleep, work, repeat.

Here are 20 tried and tested ways to shop and save without compromising your lifestyle.

Find a local repair café and learn a new skill.
For a small donation your broken items such as jewellery, small electronics or textiles can be fixed, or you can learn the skills to do it yourself.

Subscribing to multiple streaming services really adds up, so cycle through a different platform each month.
Purchase one month then immediately cancel or pause your subscription. Most streaming services will let you keep watching for the remainder of the month and you won’t be automatically charged at the end of the billing period. Also, ask yourself whether your TV supports high-definition quality which costs extra, and are ads really that bad?

Use Adelaide Metro’s savings estimator.
It’s a great guide to see possible savings if you switch from paying for fuel and parking to catching public transport. A 14 or 28-day pass may also be more cost effective if you’re a regular public transport user.

Next time you go travelling, look into house and pet-sitting as a low-cost accommodation option.
You’ll enjoy all the creature comforts of staying in a home, while also immersing yourself in local everyday life.

Stock up on discounted eGift cards with no expiry date.
You’ll find Big W, BWS, Woolworths and more with RAA Rewards and you’ll pay less for more.

You’ll also find digital newspapers, online educational courses and more.

Book holiday accommodation with a kitchen to save money on food.
A kitchen, or at least a toaster and a microwave to avoid dining out for every meal. It’s amazing how well you can make scrambled eggs in the microwave!

If you need to buy new appliances like dishwashers or dryers, check the energy-star rating for better efficiency.
Also, look for appliances that have timers so you can run them during off-peak energy times. If you have solar panels, setting timers on appliances will help you use energy from the sun when it’s at its brightest.

Bring your lunch with you to work to avoid the temptation of eating out.
A little bit of meal-prepping can go a long way.

Let deals and discounts help you decide where you want to go for a nice meal out.
Join your favourite restaurant’s app or email list, and check the great range of RAA Rewards for discounts like complimentary upgrades or free kids’ meals. If you order too much, don’t be embarrassed to ask for a takeaway container. That’s lunch for tomorrow, and it prevents food waste.

Buying produce when it’s in season will keep your grocery bill down.
Some produce, like herbs, are expensive to buy but can be cheap and easy to grow at home.

Find second-hand household items at garage sales and charity shops, and online.
Keep furniture, appliances, kitchenware and technology out of landfill. Some big brands, including Apple and IKEA, offer certified refurbished goods at a reduced rate.

Greeting cards and wrapping paper have become a luxury and the paper is considered wasteful.
Save money by making your own using items around the house such as old cards, ribbons and stickers, and for a sentimental touch, reuse your children’s or grandchildren’s drawings as wrapping.

At the supermarket, look out for a ‘quick sale’ sticker on fresh produce and freeze the items for later.
Check the tiny ‘unit price’ on price tags as larger options are usually cheaper per gram. Avoid paying for packaging by buying generic brands, and finally – don’t go shopping when you’re hungry.

Check your mobile data package.
See if you can choose a cheaper plan, a plan where mobile data can rollover (allowing you to drop back to the minimum every few months), or if data can be gifted to other members of your household.

Bring your own cup.
If barista-made brews are too good to cut, find a café that offers a discount for bringing your own reusable cup and consider if you really need the large size.

Each winter, one of our state’s biggest and brightest (no pun intended) events, Illuminate Adelaide, comes to town. This year the festival will light up the city from 2-20 July.

With such a packed program, you’re spoilt for choice. So, if you need some help maximising your time among the spellbinding sights and sounds, read on.

Best new show

Adelaide Botanic Garden is always beautiful, but it’ll be truly hypnotic when the all-new Night Visions takes over. Cutting-edge lights, lasers, projections and sound will transform and reimagine the tranquil gardens as an after-dark hub of immersive technology and a gateway into the unknown. Featuring work by local and international artists, prepare to be amazed. Best of all, RAA members receive exclusive discounts to Night Visions.

Best free show

The gong goes to the ever-popular City Lights, running from 4-20 July. Spanning North Terrace from Lot Fourteen to Festival Plaza, you’ll see our famous cultural institutions lit up in spectacular ways, including the luminous horses of FierS à Cheval, and giant goldfish in The Legend of the Golden Koi. The South Australian Museum lawns will come alive with enormous, coloured orbs in moonGARDEN and don’t miss the range of glowing, interactive installations in Rundle Illuminations in the East End.

Best family friendly show

Travel back millions of years and roam with the dinosaurs after dark when Universal Kingdom: The Next Era heads to the Adelaide Zoo. This is the latest instalment in the dino series after last year’s big hit, Prehistoric Nights. Kids (and grown-ups) will love meeting a three-horned Triceratops and watching a winged Pterodactyl soar overhead. You’ll also have the chance to pat baby dinosaurs, test your speed against superfast raptors and tremble as a Tyrannosaurus Rex thunders nearby.

The whole family will love being up close with giant, luminous dinosaurs. Image: Illuminate Adelaide

Best high-tech show

Nothing beats cheering on your favourite team at the Adelaide Oval – nothing but the dazzling new show, Horizons, that is. For one night only, on 18 July, Horizons will turn our world-famous oval into a huge canvas, with hundreds of illuminated drones dotted throughout the sky. State-of-the-art lighting, audio and screen technology will tell a story of our past, present and where we want the future to take us. It’s the best thing to happen to the Adelaide Oval since AFL footy.

Best way to unwind

Crowd-favourite RAA Lounge is back again at Base Camp at Lot Fourteen. Head to Base Camp before or after your light-filled travels and relax and warm your bones by a crackling fire pit. Enjoy a beef rib banh mi or a fluffy cinnamon doughnut and get yourself a cool or warm drink to recharge your batteries before you head off to the next unmissable exhibition.
